I don't know how plausible something like this is.
But the states were initially set up to keep the federal government at bay and allow the states to run themselves. One reason for this was so that a state could act as a guinea pig for the country to enact laws and such. If it was a good change then other states could adopt it, if it were a bad change the one state could dismiss it without affecting EVERYONE. For example a single state could try this socialized healthcare crap, see how terrible it would be and then ditch it without subjecting the whole nation to it where it would be very difficult to absolve.
Anyway back to my idea. (it may not even be a new idea, but I haven't seen anyone put anything on the table yet)
Texas has been mentioned in revolt ideas, due to its location and size.
Well how about texas shut down all welfare programs it possibly can at the state level. Make it harder to obtain welfare. The drudges would be forced to move to another 'friendlier' state. Leaving room for hard working americans to move in.
Close its own borders and handle it in a way that it sees fit. Succeed if necessary, but may not be. perhaps split into 4 states, quadrupling its representatives. and spread growth back out into society, by taking on beneficial practices of free market and such. Perhaps other states would take notice.
